Slow Living, Season by Season
A seasonal guide to slowing down: autumn gathering, winter rest, spring clearing and summer days outside.
A seasonal guide to slowing down. Pick one idea per season and let it settle.
None of this needs a mountain view. A city flat, a small town or a suburban street all have seasons. The trick is noticing them and letting them shape how you cook, rest and spend your free time.
Autumn: gather in
- Make one big pot of soup each Sunday. Our soup pot recipe is a good start.
- Collect pinecones, branches and dried grasses for the table
- Swap bright bulbs for warm, low lamps in the evening
- Take a long walk when the leaves turn
Winter: rest well
- Build a reading corner with a blanket and good light
- Bake bread on a cold weekend morning
- Keep evenings screen-light; try cards, puzzles or letters
- Walk in fresh snow early, before anyone else
Spring: open up
- Air out the house and clear one cupboard a week
- Grow herbs on a sunny windowsill
- Cook with the first green vegetables
- Find a nearby trail and walk it as it wakes up
Summer: stay out
- Eat dinner outside as often as you can
- Pack a simple picnic and find water: a lake, a river, a creek
- Watch the sunset with nothing to photograph
- Plan one unhurried outdoor weekend
